Dr Anthony Harries

Dr Anthony Harries

Senior Advisor, Research

Dr Anthony D Harries spent over 20 years in sub-Saharan Africa, working on TB, HIV/AIDS and TB-HIV. Author of hundreds of published papers, in 2008, he joined The Union to launch the Department of Research.

Dr Riitta Dlodlo

Dr Riitta Dlodlo

Director, Department of Tuberculosis and HIV

Dr Riitta Dlodlo (MD, MPH) is a physician and public health specialist with extensive experience in Zimbabwe since 1982 and other countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa since 2003.  She has published on TB, TB-HIV and adult mortality and became Director, Department of TB and HIV in 2015.  

 

Director, Department of Tuberculosis and HIV: Primary contact of The Union's Challenge TB programme in countries where The Union is the lead- India, DRC and Zimbabwe. Technical liaison contact lead with Project Management Unit; supervises also the TB-HIV Union activities in Myanmar and China, and liaises with Union staff on non TB-HIV activities. 


Dr Gan Quan

Director of Tobacco Control

Dr Gan Quan completed his PhD in Public Health and a post-doc on tobacco control research. Since 2009, he has managed China’s Bloomberg Initiative tobacco control grants, developed campaigns and conducted policy research. He became Director of The Union China Office in 2014 and Director of the Tobacco Control Department in 2017.

Director of Tobacco Control: provides overall leadership of The Union’s tobacco control programme, and strategic direction, goals and targets for the programme’s in-country work. Advises and counsels The Union’s tobacco control teams based in the regional / country offices.  

Dr Ajay Kumar

Dr Ajay Kumar

Director, Department of Research

Dr Ajay Kumar is a seasoned Public Health Practitioner with over 14 years of experience in low- and middle-income settings. He has worked for WHO-India as a consultant for providing technical assistance to the Government of India’s National Tuberculosis Programme, particularly in leading TB-HIV co-ordination activities. He is an author/co-author of over 140 publications, with many contributing to a change in policy/practice and has facilitated over 60 national and international courses.

Director, department of Research: leads the Centre for Operational Research of The Union and enhances strategic information and operational research capacity in the field of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases.


Helen Platt

Helen Platt

Global Director of Communications

Helen Platt became Global Director of Communications in 2017 after being a communication’s advisor to The Union for two years. She has delivered social impact communication campaigns for numerous international organisations, including Amnesty International, the London 2012 Olympics, Wikipedia, the BBC and the UK National Health Service. Her experience covers all aspects of communications including developing senior level strategy, developing multimedia advertising and brands, placing hundreds of articles in media outlets worldwide and writing content for a range of media channels. 

Global Director of Communications: leads a global team delivering marketing, branding, PR, social media, multimedia content and events for all elements of The Union’s work. Advises on all elements of communications to ensure The Union speaks with one, strong voice.

Abel Jabol

Global Information Technology Director

Abel has over 18 years of international IT experience having previously managed global projects for international law firms in France, New Delhi, Shanghai and Spain. Skilled in designing infrastructure and implementing technology to support organisations internationally, he manages the IT budgets and staff and oversees the organisation’s IT projects successful development, from needs analysis and requirements definition to vendor selection, implementation, and training. 


Global Information Technology Director: responsible for the design, development and implementation of organisational information systems, software applications, and IT support and infrastructure systems across the organisation.

Global Finance Controller

Aziz joined The Union in 2006 and has driven the efficient use of resources, people and ensuring value for money and financial stability across the organisation. He is responsible for ensuring that the financial information of The Union and its branch offices and affiliates is accurately recorded and maintained, ensuring that the organisation's work is supported around the world.

Gustavo Sóñora

Gustavo Sóñora

Director, The Union Mexico Office

Gustavo has been working for The Union since 2008. He has been a long-time champion for tobacco control in the region and a well-respected tobacco control expert particularly in issues related to Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and interference from the tobacco industry. A native from Uruguay, Gustavo has played a key role in helping the Uruguayan government in passing some of the most progressive policies in tobacco control and winning the landmark legal case against Philip Morris.

Director, The Union Mexico Office: overall leadership, development, coordination, implementation and promotion of The Union’s tobacco control activities in the Latin America Region.


Nick Southern

Nick Southern

Director, The Union Office in Myanmar

Nick Southern brings 30 years of experience in International Development to his work in Myanmar. He has led, directed and managed programmes focussed on sustainable programme development strategies and policy formulation in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. His work has spanned human rights; environmental and public health; water and sanitation; and emergency and humanitarian disaster preparation and response. Before joining The Union he was the Southern Africa Regional Director for Save the Children International.

Director, The Union Office in Myanmar: provides leadership and strategic direction of The Union’s regional and global health programmes with activities in Myanmar.

Dr Jamhoih (Jamie) Tonsing

Dr Jamhoih (Jamie) Tonsing

Director, The Union South-East Asia Office

Dr Jamhoih (Jamie) Tonsing has over 15 years of clinical and public health experience,  providing technical assistance to Ministries of Health and implementing complex multi-stakeholder projects in her home country of India and across South-East Asia, before joining The Union in 2014.

Director, The Union South-East Asia Office: provides leadership and management of the programme activities of The Union South-East office and oversight of the development, funding and implementation of the strategy in the region.


Dr Christopher Zishiri

Dr Christopher Zishiri

Director, The Union Zimbabwe Office

Dr Christopher Zishiri trained in Zimbabwe and the UK and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians. He has served as Director of The Union Zimbabwe Office since 2013, and has more than 20 years of experience in clinical work and healthcare management, including serving as Zimbabwe’s tobacco control focal person.

Director, The Union Zimbabwe Office: provides leadership  and strategic direction of The Union Zimbabwe Office’s programmes and serves as the primary technical liaison with the NTP within the National AIDS and TB Unit of the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoH&CC), the USAID Mission to Zimbabwe, PMU and other Challenge TB partners in the country and internationally.

Director, The Union Peru Office

Dr Victor Zamora has worked at the Ministry of Health of Peru as health manager at the local, regional and national level. During the last 15 years he has worked also for USAID, UK-DFID, UNFPA, PAHO/WHO in more than 10 countries in Latinamerica. 

The Union Peru Office in Lima provides a base for TB, MDR-TB, HIV and lung health technical assistance and training, as well as other coordinating services for The Union’s Spanish-speaking constituents.


Professor Kevin Mortimer

Director, Lung Health

Professor Kevin Mortimer went to medical school at the University of Cambridge and did a PhD at the University of Nottingham. He moved to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in 2011 as Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is co-Deputy Director of the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Lung Health and Tuberculosis in Africa at LSTM and was co-Principal Investigator in the Cooking and Pneumonia Study.

Lung Health Director: Develop epidemiological, clinical and operational research studies to achieve improved lung health across the life course for the poor. 

Dr Grania Brigden

Deputy Director, Department of Tuberculosis and HIV

Before working with The Union, Grania was TB and AMR Advisor for the Médicins Sans Frontières Access Campaign to develop and implement the core priorities of the TB Dossier. Prior to MSF, Grania worked in Uganda with Voluntary Services Overseas at the International Hospital Kampala and Reach Out Mbuya, a non-governmental organisation, and in Banda Ache, Indonesia with Medic Global Sikhs/Waves of Mercy. 

Deputy Director, Department of Tuberculosis and HIV: Develop relationships to expand The Union’s work programmes for TB, HIV and co-morbidities. Participate in the development of the strategic directions for the TB-HIV Department.
