Dr Anthony Harries

Dr Anthony Harries

Senior Advisor, Research

Dr Anthony D Harries spent over 20 years in sub-Saharan Africa, working on TB, HIV/AIDS and TB-HIV. Author of hundreds of published papers, in 2008, he joined The Union to launch the Department of Research.

Dr Grania Brigden

Dr Grania Brigden

Director, Department of Tuberculosis

Before working with The Union, Grania was TB and AMR Advisor for the Médicins Sans Frontières Access Campaign to develop and implement the core priorities of the TB Dossier. Prior to MSF, Grania worked in Uganda with Voluntary Services Overseas at the International Hospital Kampala and Reach Out Mbuya, a non-governmental organisation, and in Banda Ache, Indonesia with Medic Global Sikhs/Waves of Mercy. 

Director, Department of Tuberculosis: Develop the department’s activities in TB, including promoting the Life Prize project that unites researchers in a unique collaboration to find a one-month or less treatment regimen for all types of TB. Dr Brigden will also continue to develop work in the area of basic TB science and research and development.


Dr Gan Quan

Director of Tobacco Control

Dr Gan Quan completed his PhD in Public Health and a post-doc on tobacco control research. Since 2009, he has managed China’s Bloomberg Initiative tobacco control grants, developed campaigns and conducted policy research. He became Director of The Union China Office in 2014 and Director of the Tobacco Control Department in 2017.

Director of Tobacco Control: provides overall leadership of The Union’s tobacco control programme, and strategic direction, goals and targets for the programme’s in-country work. Advises and counsels The Union’s tobacco control teams based in the regional / country offices.  

Dr Ajay Kumar

Dr Ajay Kumar

Director, Department of Research

Dr Ajay Kumar is a seasoned Public Health Practitioner with over 15 years of experience in low- and middle-income settings. He has worked for WHO-India as a consultant for providing technical assistance to the Government of India’s National Tuberculosis Programme, particularly in leading TB-HIV co-ordination activities. He is an author/co-author of over 170 publications, with many contributing to a change in policy/practice and has facilitated over 75 national and international courses.

Director, department of Research: leads the Centre for Operational Research of The Union and enhances strategic information and operational research capacity in the field of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases.


Patrick Wilson

Patrick Wilson

Global Director of Communications

Patrick has more than 20 years’ experience leading communications for universities, research institutes, international NGOs and charities. He joins The Union from HelpAge International, where he a global team supporting advocacy with governments and UN agencies and responding to humanitarian crises, and from 2011-17 as Head of Communications at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where he worked closely with colleagues in TB and other areas of global and public health.

Global Director of Communications: leads a global team delivering marketing, branding, PR, social media, multimedia content and events for all elements of The Union’s work., and advises on all elements of communications to ensure The Union speaks with one, strong voice.

Nicky Redmond

Nicky Redmond

Director of Conferences

During her career of 30 years, Nicky has delivered global conferences and live events to organisations including Deloitte, DHL, Cathay Pacific and Roche. Her proven experience, leadership and management style ensure the delivery of targeted communications, event logistics, and conference production.  

Director of Conferences: Directs operations for The Union's conferences, providing strategic leadership and overseeing the production of conferences including the Union World Conference on Lung Health and the World Conference on Tobacco or Health.


Aïssa Aridj

Aïssa Aridj

Director of Finance

Aïssa has more than 20 years’ experience as a finance professional, he was most recently Finance Manager for France Aggreko France. Aïssa held management roles in finance at ONET Sécurité, Icare and then Aggreko, and has worked with diverse teams across Europe.

Director of Finance: overall management responsibility for The Union’s finances across the globe, focusing on strengthening the organisation’s current position, as well as further developing its financial management, control and capabilities.

Gustavo Sóñora

Gustavo Sóñora

Regional Director of Latin America

Gustavo has been working for The Union since 2008. He has been a long-time champion for tobacco control in the region and a well-respected tobacco control expert particularly in issues related to Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and interference from the tobacco industry. A native from Uruguay, Gustavo has played a key role in helping the Uruguayan government in passing some of the most progressive policies in tobacco control and winning the landmark legal case against Philip Morris.

Regional Director of Latin America: overall leadership, development, coordination, implementation and promotion of The Union’s tobacco control activities in the Latin America Region.


Nick Southern

Nick Southern

Director, The Union Office in Myanmar

Nick Southern brings 30 years of experience in International Development to his work in Myanmar. He has led, directed and managed programmes focussed on sustainable programme development strategies and policy formulation in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. His work has spanned human rights; environmental and public health; water and sanitation; and emergency and humanitarian disaster preparation and response. Before joining The Union he was the Southern Africa Regional Director for Save the Children International.

Director, The Union Office in Myanmar: provides leadership and strategic direction of The Union’s regional and global health programmes with activities in Myanmar.

Dr Christopher Zishiri

Dr Christopher Zishiri

Director, The Union Zimbabwe Office

Dr Christopher Zishiri trained in Zimbabwe and the UK and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians. He has served as Director of The Union Zimbabwe Office since 2013, and has more than 20 years of experience in clinical work and healthcare management, including serving as Zimbabwe’s tobacco control focal person.

Director, The Union Zimbabwe Office: provides leadership  and strategic direction of The Union Zimbabwe Office’s programmes and serves as the primary technical liaison with the NTP within the National AIDS and TB Unit of the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoH&CC), the USAID Mission to Zimbabwe, PMU and other Challenge TB partners in the country and internationally.


Professor Kevin Mortimer

Professor Kevin Mortimer

Director, Lung Health

Professor Kevin Mortimer went to medical school at the University of Cambridge and did a PhD at the University of Nottingham. He moved to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in 2011 as Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is co-Deputy Director of the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Lung Health and Tuberculosis in Africa at LSTM and was co-Principal Investigator in the Cooking and Pneumonia Study.

Lung Health Director: Develop epidemiological, clinical and operational research studies to achieve improved lung health across the life course for the poor. 

Dr Riitta Dlodlo

Dr Riitta Dlodlo

Senior Advisor

Dr Riitta Dlodlo (MD, MPH) is a physician and public health specialist with extensive experience in Zimbabwe since 1982 and other countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa since 2003.  She has published on TB, TB-HIV and adult mortality and became Director, Department of TB and HIV in 2015. 

Senior Advisor: oversee the delivery of the Union’s TB courses with a special focus to modernise the training and education activities of technical courses, and provide guidance on the development of new online courses and the Union’s existing e-learning portals.
