Director, The Union China Office

Dr Gan Quan completed his PhD in Public Health and a post-doc on tobacco control research. Since 2009, he has managed China’s Bloomberg Initiative tobacco control grants, developed campaigns and conducted policy research. He became Director of The Union China Office in 2014.

The Union China Office in Beijing coordinates activities in China focused on tobacco control, tuberculosis and TB-diabetes.  The office works closely with public health programmes, national and international partners and donors.

Dr Jean Pierre Kabuayi

Dr Jean Pierre Kabuayi

Director, The Union DR Congo Office

Dr Jean Pierre Kabuayi started his career in general medicine, but soon focused on the need for effective TB and TB-HIV treatment. Through his work with the DR Congo's National TB Programme, he collaborated with The Union for more than a decade, prior to his appointment as director.

The DR Congo Office supports a Challenge TB grant focused on improving access to high-quality, patient-centred care for TB, TB-HIV and MDR-TB; preventing TB transmission and disease progression; and strengthening TB services.


Nick Southern

Director, The Union Office in Myanmar

Nick Southern brings 30 years of experience in global development to his work in Myanmar. He has previously worked on issues from sustainable programme development and policy formulation to disaster response and community engagement. Most recently, he was Southern Africa Regional Director for Save the Children International.

The Union Office in Myanmar is a registered international non-governmental organisation in Myanmar since 2012. Located in Mandalay, it provides TB, HIV and TB-HIV services with the Ministry of Health, Department of Public Health and other partners.

The Union Uganda Office: In 2007, The Union Uganda Office in Kampala became our first country office in Africa. It currently focuses on the SPARK-TB project funded by TB REACH.


Dr Christopher Zishiri

Dr Christopher Zishiri

Director, The Union Zimbabwe Office

Dr Christopher Zishiri trained in Zimbabwe and the UK and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians. As Director of The Union Zimbabwe Office since 2013, he brings 20+ years in clinical work and healthcare management, including serving as Zimbabwe’s tobaccon control focal person.

The Union Zimbabwe Office in Harare coordinates the Challenge TB programme there and manages other TB-HIV activities. 

Gustavo Sóñora

Gustavo Sóñora

Regional Director of Latin America and Director of The Union Mexico Office

Gustavo has been working for The Union since 2008. He has been a long-time champion for tobacco control in the region and a well-respected tobacco control expert particularly in issues related to Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and interference from the tobacco industry. A native from Uruguay, Gustavo has played a key role in helping the Uruguayan government in passing some of the most progressive policies in tobacco control and winning the landmark legal case against Philip Morris.
