Tobacco Industry Interference

Fending off the tobacco industry in Brazil

In mid-2012, the tobacco company Souza Cruz (the Brazilian subsidiary of British American Tobacco) brought a judicial claim against Brazil's NGO Alliance Against Tobacco (ACT). The claim requested termination of ACT's media campaign to ban advertising and marketing of tobacco products. The campaign had been initiated as part of a Union-funded project with ACT. Legal advisors from The Union supported ACT to present their response to the claim before the court in Rio de Janeiro. The judge ruled that Souza Cruz's claim was invalid and that the lawsuit would not proceed.
