Technical Publications

The Union developed its first technical guide in the late 1970s to facilitate the knowledge and technology transfer between consultants with extensive field experience and low-income countries in the throes of establishing national tuberculosis control programmes and policies.

Management of Tuberculosis, also known as "The Orange Guide" first appeared in 1986 and the sixth edition was published in 2010. More than 50,000 copies have been disseminated around the world, and many other guides and resources have since been published. Most of these materials may be downloaded at no charge. 

Roadmap for Zoonotic Tuberculosis

The first-ever Roadmap for Zoonotic TB was launched in October 2017 at the 48th Union World Conference on  Lung Health. Four partners in health, the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) have joined forces to develop the roadmap and address the major health and economic impact of this disease.

Child TB training toolkit

The report, The Looming Co-epidemic of TB-Diabetes: A Call to Action was launched at the 45th Union World Conference on Lung Health in Barcelona, Spain October 28-November 1. It synthesises evidence from the medical and scientific literature, promotes an international policy framework for action and lays out a new research agenda to fill knowledge gaps.

Laboratory Diagnosis of Tuberculosis by Sputum Microscopy: The Handbook

Both the World Health Organization and The Union recognise that smear microscopy remains an important tool for the laboratory diagnosis of TB and in monitoring the patients' response to treatment. This practical guide, an effort of the Global Laboratory Initiative, is meant for laboratory technicians at the bench. It replaces both the 1998 WHO and 2000 IUATLD guides on smear microscopy and contains many new elements.

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and its guidelines provide the foundation for countries to implement and manage tobacco control. To help make this a reality, WHO introduced the MPOWER measures which correspond to one or more articles of the Framework Convention, to assist in reducing the demand for tobacco products at country-level. These brochures, endorsed by The Union and all its Partners in the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, are intended to further this support, summarizing key data and recommendations in each of these policy areas.
