The Princess Chichibu Memorial TB Global Award recognises outstanding contributions to global TB control. It is awarded by the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association (JATA).
About the award
The Princess Chichibu Memorial TB Global Award is presented annually in memory of Princess Chichibu of Japan by the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association (JATA). It is awarded at the Union World Conference the year following the year in which the nomination is made. Further details about the award can be downloaded at the bottom of the page.
Recipients
2023: Dr Paula Fujiwara
The 2023 award, presented by the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association, went to Dr Paula Fujiwara for her contribution to global TB control for over 20 years, to which she has committed her whole professional life.
2022: Dr Mao Tan Eang
The award was presented to Dr Mao Tan Eang for his outstanding leadership in improving the situation of TB in Cambodia. He was the driving force behind the removal of Cambodia from the World Health Organization (WHO) list of TB high-burden countries in 2021.
2021: Prof Knut Lönnroth
The award was presented to Prof Knut Lönnroth for the enormous contribution that he has made to TB control over the last 20 years, at an international level.
2020: Dr Soumya Swaminathan
The award was presented to Dr Soumya Swaminathan by Her Imperial Highness The Princess Akishino for her outstanding devotion to global TB control and offering her support to those without a voice.
2019: Dr Amina Jindani
The award, presented by the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association, was presented to Dr Amina Jindani, a globally recognised specialist in the field of TB research.
2018: Dr Muhammad Amir Khan
The award was presented to Dr Muhammad Amir Khan by Her Imperial Highness The Princess Akishino, who serves as patroness of the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association, at the 49th Union World Conference on Lung Health in The Hague, Netherlands. Dr Khan, the Chief Executive for the Association for Social Development (ASD), was acknowledged for over 20 years of development, research and implementation support work with the National TB Control Program in Pakistan.
