Union Middle East Region holds successful conference in Cairo

Some 1,500 delegates attended the 28th Union Conference of The Middle East Region in Cairo, Egypt on 24-27 March 2015. The event was held in conjunction with the 56th International Congress of the Egyptian Society of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis (ESCT) at the Fairmont Towers Heliopolis.

Prof Mohammed Awad-Tag El Din, who is the Secretary-General and Board Representative for The Union Middle East Region, served President of the Congress. He is also President of the ESCT.

The conference programme included plenary lectures, post-graduate courses, workshops and symposia on lung health topics ranging from asthma and TB to tobacco dependence treatment and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 

Dr E Jane Carter, President of The Union and José Luis Castro, Executive Director, both spoke at the Opening Ceremony.  Other key speakers from The Union included Dr. Lin Yan of The Union China Office, who discussed the TB-diabetes bi-directional project conducted in China and Prof. Asma El Sony of Sudan, former President of The Union, who presented the 2014 Global Asthma Report and co-presented a session on biomedical ethics.

In addition Marianne Gaye-Arault, Director of The International Management Development Programme, and Dr Gihan El Nahas, offered a half-day course on project management.
