In the lead up to World AIDS Day on December 1, a Union webinar at 12pm GMT on 28 November will bring experts together to discuss the related epidemics of tuberculosis (TB) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the risk of developing TB is up to 27 times greater for people living with HIV (PLHIV) than those without HIV infection. TB remains the leading cause of death among PLHIV, with 374,000 TB related deaths in 2016.

The panel will discuss the collaboration needed between the TB and HIV communities, in order that we can achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and end both AIDS and TB by 2030.

The panel features:

  • Dr Linda Gail-Bekker, President of the International AIDS Society, Professor of  Medicine  and   Deputy  Director, Desmond  Tutu  HIV  Centre, Cape Town.
  • Dr Ishwar Gilada, President of the AIDS Society of India and founder and Secretary General of the People's Health Organisation. Dr Gilada was one of the first doctors in India to implement HIV care when initial cases were diagnosed in 1986.
