The Union, the Peruvian Ministry of Health and Janssen, the pharmaceutical companies of Johnson & Johnson, joined forces to host a recent workshop facilitated by, Dr A José Caminero from the MDR-TB Unit of the Department of TB and HIV.

More than 50 members of the Peruvian healthcare community came together on 3 and 4 October in Lima for a course on effectively managing treatment for patients with MDR-TB. Trained as a chest physician in Spain and recognised as a global MDR-TB specialist, Dr Caminero presented to a full room of fully engaged pulmonologists, tuberculosis specialists, policy-makers and others. Attendees learned from Dr Caminero’s extensive MDR-TB management expertise, shared their own experiences and explored how to best reduce the burden of this difficult-to-treat infection, particularly in Latin America’s high-prevalence countries.

“Dr Caminero captivated the audience and inspired participants to view no case as incurable. This training seeks to arm local practitioners with the best-available information, skills and confidence to address MDR-TB among the Peruvian people,” Tomas Matthews, Director of Global Access at Janssen, commented following the weekend session.

This training and opportunity for exchange builds on the success of the 2014 MDR-TB Summit, also held in Lima, where more than 80 stakeholders, including policy-makers and healthcare providers, came together to engage in a cross-sector dialogue on how to better support patients and address the MDR-TB burden across Latin America.
