The Union developed its first technical guide in the late 1970s to facilitate the knowledge and technology transfer between consultants with extensive field experience and low-income countries in the throes of establishing national tuberculosis control programmes and policies.

Management of Tuberculosis, also known as "The Orange Guide" first appeared in 1986 and the sixth edition has been published in 2010 in English, French and Spanish. More than 50,000 copies have been disseminated around the world.

The widespread use of this first guide encouraged The Union to develop additional guides. Today, it publishes technical guides, books, CDs, posters, factsheets and other educational resources.
