Operational research is an essential component of The Union's TB/HIV work. Research that studied barriers to implementing TB/HIV service has been carried out in Uganda. The results identified barriers at all levels of implementation of TB/HIV collaborative services, including within the health system, at the health facility and at the patient and community level. These results highlight the need for policy-makers and implementers to work together to ensure a comprehensive approach to addressing the barriers and developing successful integrated care.
The Union's Clinical Trial Division is currently conducting a trial related to improving TB/HIV treatment sponsored by the French National AIDS Research Agency (Agence Nationale de Recherche Sur le Sida – ANRS). This Phase II study is investigating the pharmacokinetics of rifabutin combined with antiretroviral therapy in the treatment of tuberculosis patients with HIV infection.
