The Union offers technical assistance at the request of governments, agencies and other organisations, with emphasis on serving low- and middle-income countries and populations. Interventions are planned as partnerships that support national/local autonomy in defining and reaching objectives that reflect international standards and policies.

Clinical areas in which The Union provides expert assistance include:

• Tuberculosis
• Childhood tuberculosis
• Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis
• HIV
• TB/HIV integration
• HIV-related lung diseases in children
• Asthma
• COPD and other lung diseases
• Child pneumonia
• Smoking cessation
• Other non-communicable diseases

Support is also offered for other critically important areas, including:

• Tobacco control and meeting FCTC requirements
• Operational research
• Laboratory strengthening to meet EQA standards
• Procurement and monitoring of drugs and other supplies
• Management skills including planning, budgeting and evaluation
• Human resource management
• Health system strengthening

Three levels of assistance are offered, based on the needs of the requesting partner:

Intensive technical assistance

Intensive technical assistance is offered to support objectives, such as:

• Increasing case detection
• Improving treatment rates
• Developing human resources
• Following international guidelines
• Implementing global strategies

Short-term technical assistance

This assistance is limited to short-term specific interventions, such as:

• Field visits and other site visits
• Programme reviews and evaluations
• Training programmes
• Laboratory system assessments
• Drug and materials procurement
• Ensuring logistics and deliveries
