Registration is now open for the 44th Union World Conference on Lung Health to be held in Paris on 30 October–3 November 2013. The conference is the largest annual meeting focusing on lung health and related issues as they affect low- and middle-income countries. The theme this year is "Shared air, safe air?"

After 22 years as Executive Director of The Union, Dr Nils E Billo announced his decision to retire at a retreat of the organisation's Board of Directors on 7 June. The Board has appointed José Luis Castro, Deputy Executive Director, to serve as Interim Executive Director while a search is undertaken for a permanent Executive Director.
The Union supports the "Overhead Myth" campaign launched to raise awareness among donors that the percentage of funds that an organisation spends on overhead is a poor indicator of its effectiveness or overall performance.
On 27 May, at the 66th World Health Assembly (WHA), UN Member States unanimously adopted an omnibus resolution on NCDs that fulfills commitments made in 2011's UN Political Declaration on NCDs and signals consensus on the three pillars of the global NCD architecture – action, accountability and coordination.
A clinical trial to assess a 9-month standardised treatment regimen for MDR-TB has begun in South Africa, Ethiopia and Vietnam. The trial conducted by The Union's TREAT-TB initiative will involve 400 patients in Africa and Asia.

This year's World No Tobacco Day theme focuses on the need to ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS). The Union strongly supports this campaign, since the removal of TAPS alone has been shown to reduce tobacco consumption by an average of seven percent.

On 29 April the Bangladesh parliament passed the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Bill (Amendment) 2013, which bans smoking in all workplaces, including restaurants, and significantly amends an earlier law.
