The scope of The Union's technical courses has expanded to meet the changing needs of today's health care professionals and public health programmes. While thorough training in the prevention, treatment and control of tuberculosis continues to be one of The Union's strengths, other courses address specific skills needed for management of MDR-TB, tobacco control, operational research, child lung health management, TB/HIV collaborative programmes and more
The primary objective of this course is to provide clinicians working in low income settings with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis, especially MDR-TB. The course will also introduce participants to the challenges introduced by XDR-TB.
The course will be carried out with an emphasis upon the theory of tuberculosis control which will be taught primarily through lectures and discussion, and the conduct of a national tuberculosis programme under field conditions which will be taught primarily by practical field experience in the sputum microscopy laboratory, at the district tuberculosis centre and in the hospital.
