- Education
Education is an important element of the Department of HIV, not only for its growing team of specialists and consultants, based in Paris, Myanmar, Uganda, DRC and Zimbabwe, but also for all categories of health personnel participating in development of collaborative TB/HIV services and Integrated HIV Care for Tuberculosis Patients Living with HIV/AIDS (IHC) in particular.
In conjunction with the funding from USAID, and in collaboration with the Ugandan National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Programme and the National AIDS Control Programme, The Union developed the first joint TB and HIV Programme Managers Course which was held in Jinja, Uganda, in March 2008.
The Union’s Department of HIV held its inaugural course: “Working Together - Strengthening the Implementation of Collaborative TB/HIV Activities” from April 19 – 23, 2010 in Lilongwe, Malawi, the objective of which was to improve the country-level implementation of collaborative TB/HIV activities, as measured by achievement against selected key indicators from the Global Plan to Stop TB. Malawi, Uganda and Zimbabwe’s National TB and HIV Programme Managers, their TB/HIV focal persons, the World Health Organization National Professional Officers and an activist from each country, as well as guests from South Africa, UNAIDS, the United States Agency for International Development and Management Sciences for Health were invited to both participate and contribute to course development through an extensive evaluation session. The course programme covered the major components of the 13 collaborative TB/HIV activities. In addition, there were sessions on ‘The role of patients and the community in strengthening TB/HIV collaboration’ and controversial issues (TB preventive therapy for persons living with HIV/AIDS and the use of anti-retroviral therapy for reducing incidence of TB and HIV). Activities included: interactive presentations, exercises and data review; group work on various tasks that were developed to guide the country teams to prepare their action plans; and preparation and presentation of country action plans to strengthen TB/HIV collaboration. The inaugural course was funded by a grant from NORAD. The next iteration of the course will be held in South Africa in October 2010, and Union staff are in discussions with officials in Latin America, Central Asia and China to expand the international reach of this course.
In addition, Union HIV experts attend international conferences, run workshops, post-graduate courses, poster sessions and hold symposia at The Union’s World Conference on Lung Health.
