The Union has organised international courses on tuberculosis control for several years. These courses are largely aimed at health care personnel with responsibility at regional or national level within the National Tuberculosis Programmes. This is the third module of a series of guides based on the material taught in the international TB courses.
It deals with the epidemiology of tuberculosis and attempts to delineate the determinants of exposure, infection, disease and death from tuberculosis. A selection of pertinent examples published in the biomedical literature is provided. This approach gives the basis for an intuitive and rational comprehension of the dynamics of the tuberculosis epidemic.

This guide for health professionals was written in response to the need for aid in preventing tobacco use. It is similar to other guides produced by the Union in that it suggests an implementation framework for the health district with an emphasis on structure, management and evaluation of cessation interventions with patients. Other areas covered in the guide include a framework for assessing tobacco use and its consequences in the population, assessing legislation and needs for advocacy and developing and assessing prevention programmes.

This guide describes the IUATLD long experience, in collaboration with national programmes, donors and technical organisation, in reviewing, planning and providing technical support for tuberculosis control so that the various players can understand what is expected of them and what they can expect from their partners in the field of tuberculosis control. Together with the Tuberculosis Guide, this manual gives a comprehensive view of international partnerships working towards the goal of eliminating tuberculosis.
