 Chief Austin Obiefuna of the Afro Global Alliance (Ghana) won the 2008 Karel Styblo Public Health Prize - ŠArkepix Union Awards are presented in two categories each year during the World Conference: Members of academies, researchers, scientists, organisations and members of The Union are invited to apply for these awards, which were established to recognise exceptional contributions to tuberculosis and lung disease:
The Union Scientific Award acknowledges a researcher under the age of 45 for his or her work on tuberculosis or non-tuberculous lung disease published in the past five years.
The Union Karel Styblo Public Health Prize acknowledges a health worker (physician or lay-person) or a community organisation for contributions to tuberculosis control or non-tuberculous lung disease over a period of 10 years or more.
The 2009 awards will be presented at the Opening Ceremony of the 40th Union World Conference on Lung Health, Friday, 4 December, in Cancun, Mexico. Honorees who are unable to attend the conference may designate a colleague to receive the award on their behalf Each award consists of US$ 2,000 and a certificate.

2009 Union Scientific Award

Applications must be received in Paris no later than midnight on Friday, 18 September 2009. Late applications will not be considered.
Application packages must include:
- Completed application form

- List of up to 3 most relevant publications on tuberculosis or non-tuberculous mycobacteria published within the past 5 years
- Statement (no more than 1 page) on research interests, accomplishments, research impact to date and future plans
- Hard copies or PDFs of publications supporting the application
- Statements from 2 referees (no more than one page) outlining accomplishments (Note: referees should not have been involved in training the applicant and should be qualified to comment on research accomplishments.
- Names and e-mail addresses or other contact information for the 2 referees
2009 Karel Styblo Public Health Prize
The Karel Styblo Public Health Prize is awarded to a health worker (physician or lay person) or a community organisation for contributions to tuberculosis control or non-tuberculous lung disease. The period of the contributions should be 10 years or more at the time of application. Applicants should include a well-documented description of their individual or the organisation’s work, together with the comments of the manager of the association or programme.

- Individuals should send a full curriculum vitae and bibliography, while organisations should describe their history and accomplishments.
- Each should include a description (no more than 2 pages) of the individual or organisation’s contributions to the control of tuberculosis or disease due to non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Include dates of activities and relevance to local, national, international control and public health efforts.
- 3 supporting letters (no more than 2 pages) from colleagues and collaborators, addressing the contributions of the applicant to the field.
- Names and contact information for the 3 referees.
Christmas Seals Contest
The Union holds a Christmas Seals Contest each year during its World Conference as a way of recognising this important and colourful lung health fundraising tradition. Only paid-up constituent and organisational members may submit their Christmas Seals for the exhibit and contest.
During the World Conference, the seals are displayed in The Union Village to be viewed by all delegates. Voting for the best seals takes place at the General Assembly.
If your organisation would like to participate to the 2009 Christmas Seals Contest, please submit 10 original sheets of your national stamps at least 6 weeks prior to the Conference.
In 2009, the last date submissions will be accepted is 23 October 2009.

• 2nd prize: Comite Nacional de Lucha Contra la Tuberculosis y Enfermedades del Aparato Respiratorio, Mexico.
• 3rd prize: Philippine Tuberculosis Association, Inc.

Honorary Membership
The title of Honorary Member of The Union is granted to a person who has become distinguished through active participation in The Union's activities and the fulfillment of its goals.
The Union Medal
The Union Medal is awarded to Union members who have made an outstanding contribution to the control of tuberculosis or non-tuberculous lung disease, by their scientific work and/or actions in the field.

 The Princess Chichibu Memorial TB Global Award presented to Dr. Anne Fanning - ŠArkepix The Princess Chichibu TB Memorial Global Award
The annual Princess Chichibu TB Memorial Global Award consists of a US$10,000 prize presented by the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association (JATA). It is awarded to a person for great achievements in anti-tuberculosis activities, irrespective of his or her nationality. The 2008 Princess Chichibu TB Memorial Global Award was Dr Anne Fanning (Canada).
The Stop TB Partnership Kochon Prize
This prestigious international health prize was launched in 2006 by the Stop TB Partnership and the Kochon Foundation. It acknowledges a person, institution or organisation that has made a major contribution to stopping tuberculosis.
The 2008 Stop TB Partnership Kochon Prize was shared by two recipients:
