Training for transformation workshop in Colombia
Edith Alarcón, a TB consultant based at The Union Peru Office, served on the faculty of a course for nurses called « Training for Transformation (TFT): Improving Care for People Affected by TB". Held in Bogotá, Colombia in June, this was the first offering of this workshop in the Latin America & Caribbean region. It has previously been successfully presented in 14 different countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, Russia, Latin America and Central Asia.

Funded by the International Council of Nursing (ICN), the Bogotá workshop was organised by the Colombia National Nurses Association in coordination with the National Tuberculosis Programme of Colombia. Planning for the workshop in each country involves the national nursing associations who, with their local knowledge and contacts, reinforce sustainability and local capacity building.
The workshop is referred to as « Training for Transformation » to reflect the aim and impact of the ICN TB Project activities, which enable real change to happen at a local level. The goal is  to train general nurses to serve as trainers and leaders in TB detection, treatment and patient care in their countries. Participants are guided and empowered with skills and techniques to become trainers, as well as catalysts of transformation in the development of practice, hence the title "Training for Transformation." It is also an excellent course for nurses working in TB care who wish to update their knowledge.
Aims of this TFT course
  • Nurses become better equipped with knowledge and skills related to early TB detection, DOTS and best practice in the care of those affected by TB.
  • The issue of TB-related stigmatisation and discrimination is effectively addressed.
  • Nurses are well prepared to be trainers and leaders of other health care workers.
  • Nurses become effective advocates of the DOTS strategy in their health care facilities, communities and countries.
  • There is increased attention to and sustainable improvement in TB care.
