Three health facilities in western Uganda and one in Kampala have been renovated with support from The Union and funding from the Tuberculosis Control Assistance Program (TB CAP). They are the Biiso HC III and Butiaba HC III in the Buliisa district and the Kikuube HC IV in Hoima district of western Uganda; as well as the laboratory at Nsambya Home Care, which is part of Nsambya St. Francis Hospital in Kampala.
The renovations increase space for TB/HIV services and provide a safer environment for patients and health workers. The waiting areas were constructed with Pompey grills to allow continuous air flow within the facility, so as to prevent transmission of airborne diseases, including TB. The facilities also now have spacious and well-ventilated laboratories with adequate worktops and storage facilities for equipment, reagents and tools. On 26 and 27May 2010, the renovated health facilities in western Uganda were officially handed over to the Secretaries for Health, Hon. Kafua Joyce of Buliisa and Hon. Ali Tinkamalire of Hoima by Dr. Anna Nakanwagi–Mukwaya, The Chief of Party – TB CAP program, together with the rest of The Union Uganda team. The Chief Administrative Officers and District Health Officers, as well as facility and community-based health workers, also attended the ceremony. The district representatives were grateful to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which funds TB CAP, and The Union for the continuous support extended to them in improving TB/HIV service delivery.
