TB CAP in Uganda concludes with successful close-out meeting
The Minister of State for Primary Health Care Hon James Kakooza was the chief guest. Other participants included key technical, political and administrative personnel from the 12 TB CAP-supported districts, Ministry of Health officials from the HIV/AIDS Control and National TB and Leprosy programmes (ACP and NTLP respectively), representatives of USAID, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other partner organisations. The goal was that the information gained from the meeting could be useful to the stakeholders during the design and implementation of current and future TB/HIV programmes in the country, using the experience of TB CAP. Some of the key successes described during the presentation by TB CAP Chief of Party Dr Anna Nakanwagi – Mukwaya were improvements in the TB treatment success rate; HIV counselling and testing of TB patients; the use of cotrimoxazole preventive therapy; and the systematic collection of data on TB services among people living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs). In appreciation of the contribution made by TB CAP to the NTLP, the Programme Manager Dr Francis Adatu said: ‘I thank TBCAP for supporting us in the NTLP. . .they have helped us to establish the position of an MDR coordinator at NTLP, revision and printing of the National TB guidelines, development of TB infection control guidelines, supporting the National TB/HIV Coordination Committee meetings among others. . . one thing I have liked about them is that they have worked very closely with us in the NTLP.” The Union will build on the achievements and lessons learned and identify innovative solutions to challenges faced during TB CAP in the design and implementation of future TB/HIV interventions.
